Water Needs: Tomatoes need consistent moisture. Water deeply 2-3 times a week, providing about 2.5 cm of water each time. During hot, dry periods, you may need to water more frequently. Mulching around plants can help retain soil moisture.
Sunlight Needs: Tomatoes thrive in full sun. Ensure they receive at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth and fruit production.
Time to Germinate: Tomato seeds typically germinate in 5-10 days under warm conditions. Keep soil consistently moist during this period.
Seed Soaking: Soaking seeds is not necessary for tomatoes, but you can soak them in warm water for a few hours before planting to speed up germination.
Tray/Pot Recommendations: Start seeds in small pots or seed trays with well-draining potting mix. Once seedlings have 2-3 true leaves, transplant them into larger pots or directly into the garden. If growing in containers, use pots at least 30 cm deep and wide.
Space Requirements: Space determinate varieties 60-90 cm apart and indeterminate varieties 90-120 cm apart. If planting in rows, leave 90-120 cm between rows for easy access.
Temperature Requirements: Tomatoes prefer warm temperatures between 18-29°C. They can tolerate Thailand's heat, but fruit set may be affected when temperatures exceed 35°C. Provide some afternoon shade during the hottest months.
Best Growing Season: In Thailand, tomatoes can be grown year-round in many areas. However, the best time to plant is typically at the end of the rainy season (October-November) to avoid excess moisture that can lead to diseases. A second crop can be planted in January-February.
Time to Harvest: Depending on the variety, tomatoes are ready to harvest 60-100 days after planting. Harvest when fruits are fully colored but still firm. For best flavor, pick tomatoes in the morning.
